1 Northumberland
With miles of beautiful sandy beaches, one of the wildest and the least densely populated counties. Rich in history visit Hadrian's Wall, built by the Romans to keep out the Scots and more castles open to the public than any other county.

2 Tyne and Wear
Now famous for its nightlife and culture. Its past is steeped in the heavy industry of shipbuilding and coal mining.
26 Cambridgeshire
Home to the world-famous Cambridge University. Flowing through Cambridgeshire is the river Cam, famous for the Cambridge students' punting along it.
3 County Durham
Visit the famous cathedral or Norman Durham Castle. Enjoy the Pennine views of some of the highest, wildest and finest scenery to be seen.
27 Norfolk
See the sun, and visit magnificent castles, historic houses and over 700 medieval churches. Enjoy the beautiful coastline.
4 Cumbria
Visit the Lake District, the most popular tourist area outside London, with a multitude of lakes and tarns, mountains and fells and beautiful villages. Ideal for sightseeing, walking and serious climbing.
28 Suffolk
Home of British horse racing's headquarters Newmarket. There are many beautiful and historical towns and villages to explore.
5 Cleveland
A heavy industrial area focusing on steel working and chemical production.
29 Essex
Close to London, but with both coastal resorts, and the former royal hunting ground Epping Forest.
6 North Yorkshire
Take in some of the most beautiful countryside and most spectacular coastline. There is a choice of two national parks, and many historical monuments to be found across the area.
30 Hertfordshire
Enjoy the Heritage to be found in Hatfield House or the history of a Roman settlement in the beautiful city of St Albans.
7 Lancashire
Enjoy the beautiful scenery and in Blackpool the biggest seaside resort in Europe.
31 Bedfordshire

8 Isle of Man
Not part of the United Kingdom. The island roads are used annually for the world famous motorcycle event the TT.

11 South Yorkshire

12 Manchester

13 Merseyside

37 London

14 Cheshire

38 Surrey

15 Derbyshire
See the natural scenery in the Peak District. It is famed for its stately homes and gardens and equally for some of the world's hardest rock climbs on its limestone crags.
39 Somerset
Nibble through Cheddar Gorge, the original home of Cheddar cheese, and visit the mystical and magical Glastonbury. Further a field lies the wilds of Exmoor.
16 Nottinghamshire
Famous for the legendary Robin Hood and his arch rival the Sheriff of Nottingham.
40 Kent
Nicknamed 'The garden of England’, it relies heavily on hopfields and apple orchards for its prosperity. The Weald is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
17 Lincolnshire

41 East Sussex

18 Staffordshire

19 Shropshire

43 Hampshire

20 West Midlands
